Acura RDX Generations & History Explained
First Generation – 2007 – 2012
Drivetrain
| Engine | 2.3L Turbocharged Inline 4-Cylinder |
| Horsepower | 240 |
| Torque | 260 lb-ft |
| Transmission | 5-speed automatic |
Back in 2007, the world got its very first glimpse at the very first compact SUV built by Acura. The RDX made its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show to a crowd of excited onlookers. Taking advantage of the strengths of some of its corporate siblings, the RDX was engineered using the same platform as the legendary Honda Civic and Honda CR-V. In addition to its compact footprint, the first-gen RDX benefitted from a potent yet efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produced a balanced 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive was standard on initial models with front-wheel drive variants arriving shortly after. A few years after its debut, the RDX received a light refresh highlighted by an updated front grille. Plenty of upscale interior amenities, cutting-edge tech, and an emphasis on safety helped the first-generation model of the Acura RDX capture the hearts of potential buyers.
Second Generation – 2013 – 2018
Drivetrain
| Engine | 3.5L V6 |
| Horsepower | 273 |
| Torque | 254 lb-ft |
| Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
Representing a significant leap forward in terms of style, tech, and performance – the second generation of the Acura RDX arrived for the 2013 model year. Visually, second-gen models featured a more streamlined exterior look with sculpted character lines that spanned the side of the body. Also upping the ante in terms of power, the RDX now came standard with a much larger 3.5L V6 that was both more powerful and more efficient than the prior model. Standard tech features now found on all models included a 5-inch display, rearview camera, Bluetooth streaming audio, and push-button start with keyless entry for greater convenience. There was also an available Technology package that added an HDD-based navigation system and upgraded 8-inch display. Similar to the first iteration, the second-generation RDX received another light mid-cycle refresh for the 2016 model year.
Third Generation – 2019 – Present
Drivetrain
| Engine | 2.0L Turbocharged i-VTEC® DOHC 4-Cylinder |
| Horsepower | 272 |
| Torque | 280 lb-ft |
| Transmission | 10-speed automatic |
At last, we’ve reached the impressive third generation of the dynamic Acura RDX. Perhaps the most stylish and sophisticated model to date, the RDX proudly sports a stunning Diamond Pentagon grille that visually aligns it with the remainder of the Acura model range. Once again, Acura engineers continued to push the boundaries of power and efficiency with the standard 2.0L turbocharged i-VTEC® DOHC 4-cylinder fitted to all third-gen RDX models. In addition to more horsepower and torque, the RDX also benefits from an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission for superior responsiveness and fuel economy. For the first time in the model’s history, an all-new A-Spec variant arrived with plenty of race-inspired equipment found both inside and out. Front wheel drive variants were discontinued following the 2023 model year, meaning the legendary SH-AWD system perfected by Acura was now a standard feature.
